Passenger Arrivals at Kotoka International Airport Fall by 10.3% as Container Traffic at Ports Rises 22% in March 2025
Passenger arrivals at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) witnessed a significant year-on-year decline of 10.3% to 98,146 in March 2025, the latest data from the Bank of Ghana (BoG) has revealed.
The recorded arrivals were down from 109,380 in March 2024, reflecting a slowdown in inbound passenger traffic at the country’s main airport.
On a month-on-month basis, however, the data showed a slight improvement, with tourist arrivals increasing by 2.2%, signaling a modest recovery in international travel demand.
Cumulatively, total passenger arrivals at the Kotoka International Airport and Ghana’s land borders for the first quarter of 2025 stood at 295,415. This represented a 4.1% decline compared to 308,024 arrivals recorded in the same period last year.
Ports and Harbours Activity Records Strong Growth
In contrast to the slowdown in air travel, Ghana’s ports and harbours recorded robust growth in international trade activities during the period under review.
According to the BoG report, total laden container traffic encompassing both inbound and outbound containers at the country’s two main seaports, Tema and Takoradi, surged by 22% year-on-year to 73,577 in March 2025.
On a cumulative basis, container traffic for the first quarter of 2025 rose sharply by 20.5% to 205,145, compared to figures recorded in the corresponding period of 2024.
The growth in port activity reflects resilience in Ghana’s external trade sector, bolstered by steady demand for imports and exports despite headwinds in the global economy.
