Olympic Football: France, Brazil, Germany And Japan Progress To Quarter Finals
France, Canada, Germany and Japan won to progress, while Brazil and Colombia each advanced despite suffering losses as the group stages of the women’s football at the Paris 2024 Olympics came to an end.
Tournament top scorer Marie-Antoinette Katoto flexed her scoring muscles again with a pair of goals to lead France to a 2-1 win over New Zealand and a first-place finish in Group A, while Canada edged Colombia 1-0 to punch their quarter-final ticket as well. It wasn’t all heartbreak for the South Americans, however, as they advanced as the second-best third-place team.
Germany and Japan join in the knockout stage, too, having recorded resounding wins over Zambia and Nigeria respectively.
Marta, meanwhile, will be the most relieved woman in France after Brazil joined Colombia in qualifying as one of the best third-placed teams despite their iconic skipper being sent off in a 2-0 defeat to Spain.
The Spanish and USA have yet to drop a point in this competition, with the Americans impressive once again in a well-deserved 2-1 win over Australia.
The Matildas paid a heavy price for that loss as they joined New Zealand, Nigeria and Zambia in heading for home.
