Police Intercept GHS 1 Million in One Cedi Notes Concealed in Fertiliser Bags
The Volta Regional Police Command has commenced investigations into the interception of GH₵1,021,700 in one cedi notes and coins concealed in 68 fertiliser bags, following a routine operation at the Juapong Snap Check point.
The seizure occurred at approximately 4:45 pm on Wednesday, after police officers acted on intelligence and stopped a Ford Transit vehicle travelling from Ho toward Kumasi. The vehicle, driven by Edward Ansah, was reportedly loaded with the concealed cash, prompting immediate suspicion by the police team.
According to police sources, the money was packed in bags commonly used for fertiliser storage, raising red flags over the legitimacy and intended use of the funds.
“Preliminary questioning revealed that the driver had been contracted by an unidentified individual in Kumasi to transport the money from Ho to Kumasi,” the statement noted.
The driver is currently in police custody and is said to be assisting with ongoing investigations.
In a statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Felix Danku of the Volta Regional Police Public Affairs Unit, the Command confirmed the interception and assured the public of a thorough probe into the circumstances surrounding the transportation of such a large volume of physical cash.
“The Command will keep the public informed on the outcome of the investigations,” DSP Danku said.
The nature of the intercepted cash movement has raised eyebrows, particularly in light of Ghana’s tightened financial regulations on cash transactions and concerns over illicit financial flows.
Authorities are yet to disclose the possible links to money laundering or other financial crimes, but sources say all leads, including the origin and final recipient of the funds, are being pursued.
