Premier League: Arsenal held by Brentford; Leicester stun Tottenham in comfortable win
Arsenal stumbled again as the Premier League leaders were held to a 1-1 draw by Brentford, while Tottenham’s top four hopes were dented by an embarrassing 4-1 defeat at Leicester on Saturday.
The Gunners could have moved eight points clear of second-placed Manchester City with a victory at the Emirates Stadium but could not hold on to the lead given to them after Leandro Trossard soced his first goal for the club in his fifth appearance since his January move from Brighton.
Ivan Toney scored Brentford’s equaliser to leave Arsenal without a win in their last three games in all competitions following defeats at Manchester City in the FA Cup and Everton in the league.
The Gunners still control their destiny as they chase a first Premier League title since 2004, but champions City can move to within three points if they beat Aston Villa on Sunday.
Next up for the Gunners is the small matter of a home game against Man City on Wednesday, while Brentford will be bidding to return to winning ways when they host Crystal Palace next weekend.
Leicester City fought back from a goal down to thrash Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 at the King Power Stadium.
Rodrigo Bentancur put Tottenham ahead in the 14th minute, meeting Ben Davies’s flick with a close-range finish that survived a VAR check for off-side but Nampalys Mendy levelled in the 23rd minute and two minutes later, James Maddison produced a composed low finish.
Kelechi Iheanacho scored Leicester’s third in first half stoppage-time with a curler into the bottom corner after a long ball played forward by Australian Harry Souttar on his home debut. Harvey Barnes completed the rout in the 81st minute.
The result moves Leicester up to 13th place in the Premier League table and keeps Spurs in fifth position.
Tottenham will have to pick themselves up for Tuesday’s Champions League meeting with AC Milan, while Leicester will prepare for an away game against Manchester United next weekend.
Emerson Palmieri cancelled out an opener from Joao Felix as West Ham United held Chelsea to a 1-1 draw at London Stadium in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
Felix’s first goal for Chelsea on just his second appearance for the club sent Graham Potter’s side into a 16th-minute lead, but Emerson came up with the leveller against his former team in the 28th minute.
West Ham thought that they had won it late on through Tomas Soucek, but the midfielder’s close-range effort was disallowed for offside following a VAR check.
Chelsea wanted a late penalty when Conor Gallagher’s shot hit Soucek’s hand before deflecting past the post, but the Blues were not awarded the decision, with the points ultimately being shared.
Chelsea will now switch their attention to the Champions League, with the Blues preparing to travel to Borussia Dortmund for the first leg of their last-16 tie on Wednesday night.
Newcastle United missed a golden chance to return to the top three as the Magpies were held 1-1 by a valiant Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.
It was the hosts who struck first through Marcos Senesi in the 30th minute, but it was cancelled out by Miguel Almiron’s equaliser in first-half stoppage time.
The result keeps Eddie Howe’s side in fourth spot, just two points behind Manchester United, although Newcastle holds a vastly superior goal difference.
As for Bournemouth, the draw kept them within one point from safety as their winless streak in the Premier League worryingly continues.
Ten-man Wolves boosted their bid to avoid relegation with a 2-1 win at bottom of the table Southampton with former Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina sent off moments later for two bookings in quick succession.
But Jan Bednarek’s 72nd-minute own goal turned the tide before Joao Gomes won it for 15th-placed Wolves at the death.
Crystal Palace’s James Tomkins rescued a 1-1 draw against Brighton with a 69th-minute equaliser after Solly March put Albion ahead six minutes earlier at Selhurst Park.
Goals from Willian and Manor Solomon gave Fulham a 2-0 win against Nottingham Forest at Craven Cottage.
