Premier League: Liverpool Hold Arsenal in Title Clash; Pressure Increases on Ten Hag as United Lose
Mohamed Salah’s equaliser salvaged Liverpool a 2-2 draw against title rivals Arsenal on Sunday, while Manchester United’s Erik ten Hag faced another damaging defeat at West Ham.
Cole Palmer inspired Chelsea to a 2-1 victory over Newcastle, while Tottenham fell 1-0 at Crystal Palace. Liverpool started the weekend on top after winning 11 of their opening 12 games under Arne Slot, but the draw sees them slip one point behind Manchester City, with Arsenal now five points adrift in third.
Bukayo Saka, returning from a hamstring injury, gave Arsenal an early lead with a stunning finish from Ben White’s pass. Virgil van Dijk quickly levelled from a corner, but Mikel Merino restored Arsenal’s lead before half-time. Liverpool improved after the break, and Salah scored his eighth goal of the season with an assist from Darwin Nunez.
In contrast, Ten Hag’s United were left lamenting missed opportunities in a 2-1 defeat at the London Stadium, raising further questions about his future. Despite hitting the woodwork twice, the game turned late when Jarrod Bowen converted a VAR-awarded penalty, pushing West Ham above United, who now sit 14th.
Meanwhile, Chelsea climbed to fifth thanks to another strong performance from Palmer, whose powerful finish secured the win against a struggling Newcastle side, now winless in five league games.
Crystal Palace, starting the day in the relegation zone, earned a vital three points against Tottenham, with Eberechi Eze setting up the only goal of the match.
