President Mahama Removes Chief Justice Torkornoo from Office Over Stated Misbehaviour
President John Mahama has dismissed Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office with immediate effect, citing stated misbehaviour under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.
The decision follows the receipt of a report from a constitutional committee established under Article 146(6) to investigate a petition filed by Ghanaian citizen Daniel Ofori. That petition was one of three lodged against the Chief Justice.
According to the report, the Committee, after examining testimonies and extensive evidence, determined that the grounds of stated misbehaviour as outlined in Article 146(1) had been established. It therefore recommended her removal.
President Mahama, acting in accordance with Article 146(9), implemented the recommendation without discretion.
A statement from the Presidency, signed by Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, confirmed the removal, emphasising that the decision takes effect immediately.
