President Mahama Selects Kotoko and Hearts of Oak for President’s Cup on July 6
The President of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), John Ansah, has confirmed that the sitting President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has the authority to determine which teams participate in the upcoming President’s Cup. This statement comes as Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak have been selected to compete in this year’s edition of the tournament.
The official launch of the President’s Cup took place on June 12, with notable figures in attendance, including William Katey, a director at the Ministry of Sports, and representatives from the participating clubs. The match is scheduled for July 6 at the Accra Sports Stadium.
In last year’s competition, Kotoko faced a tough defeat against Côte d’Ivoire’s ASEC Mimosas, following a directive from former President Nana Akufo-Addo aimed at celebrating the friendship between Ghana and its neighbor.
Ansah emphasized the role of the President in team selection, stating, “It is the prerogative of the sitting President of Ghana to determine which teams play in the President’s Cup, and I am just an organizer.”
Both Kotoko and Hearts of Oak finished the recent Ghana Premier League season in third and fourth place, respectively, making their participation in this celebrated fixture even more significant.
The anticipation surrounding the President’s Cup reflects the ongoing commitment to revitalizing Ghana’s football scene and enhancing the competitive spirit among the nation’s top clubs.
