President Mahama Swears in COP Christian Yohuno as New IGP
President John Dramani Mahama has officially sworn in Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP).
The ceremony, held at the Jubilee House on Friday, March 14, follows the dismissal of Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, who had served as IGP since 2021.
While the government has not provided an official reason for Dr. Dampare’s removal, sources suggest the decision is part of a broader effort to restructure the Ghana Police Service’s leadership and operational focus.
Dr. Dampare’s Tenure and Reforms
Dr. Dampare’s tenure as IGP was marked by key policing reforms aimed at enhancing public trust, accountability, and professionalism within the force. Under his leadership, the Ghana Police Service introduced several initiatives to improve community engagement, strengthen internal discipline, and modernize policing strategies.
His leadership also saw a reduction in crime levels and increased transparency in law enforcement operations, earning him praise from security analysts and the general public.
COP Yohuno’s New Mandate
As COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno assumes office as IGP, expectations remain high regarding the direction of policing in Ghana.
With over four decades of experience in law enforcement, COP Yohuno has held several key positions, including Accra Regional Commander, Director-General of the Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD), and most recently, Deputy IGP in charge of Operations.
His appointment signals a new phase for the Ghana Police Service, with a focus on reinforcing discipline, improving operational efficiency, and addressing security challenges nationwide.
