PSG Clinches Historic UEFA Super Cup Title After Thrilling Comeback Against Tottenham
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) kicked off the new season in style by lifting the UEFA Super Cup, defeating Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 on penalties after a dramatic 2-2 draw in regulation time. This victory marks a historic achievement as PSG becomes the first French club to claim the Super Cup trophy.
The match, held at the Stadio Friuli, saw Spurs take an early lead. Micky van de Ven opened the scoring in the 39th minute, and Cristian Romero doubled the advantage just three minutes into the second half. With Tottenham in control, it seemed they were on the brink of securing the trophy under new head coach Thomas Frank.
However, PSG demonstrated their resilience, with substitutes making a significant impact late in the game. Lee Kang-in sparked hope for the Parisians by scoring in the 85th minute, followed by Goncalo Ramos, who headed home the equalizer just four minutes into stoppage time.
This late surge pushed the match into a penalty shootout, where PSG initially stumbled as Vitinha missed their opening kick. Nevertheless, new goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier emerged as the hero, saving attempts from Van de Ven and Mathys Tel.
PSG capitalized on the missed opportunities, with Nuno Mendes scoring the decisive penalty to secure the win after Ramos, Ousmane Dembele, and Lee converted their kicks. Although Spurs’ Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Pedro Porro found the net, it was not enough to overcome PSG’s advantage.
This victory adds to PSG’s impressive trophy haul in 2025, bringing their total to five. It also sets a positive tone for the season ahead, as they prepare to begin their Ligue 1 campaign against Nantes on Sunday. Meanwhile, Tottenham will shift their focus to the Premier League, facing Burnley at home on Saturday.
