Public Transport Fares to Rise by 20% From August 8
Public transport fares across Ghana are set to increase by 20% effective Friday, August 8, 2025, following a directive from the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) in collaboration with major transport unions.
The fare hike, according to a joint statement signed by the Council’s General Secretary, Emmanuel Ohene-Yeboah, and Acting National Chairman, Alhaji Tanko, is in line with the Administrative Arrangement on Public Transport Fares and reflects the growing cost pressures on commercial transport operators.
The GRTCC cited three main factors underpinning the fare adjustment. First, it noted that commercial drivers and transport companies have not realised any significant reduction in the cost of spare parts and operational inputs, despite a 15% fare cut that was implemented on May 21, 2025.
Secondly, the recent imposition of a GH¢1.00 per litre fuel levy has triggered an average 8% rise in fuel prices, substantially increasing daily running costs for operators.
Lastly, the Council pointed to deteriorating road conditions nationwide, which it said have escalated vehicle maintenance costs and reduced the lifespan of transport assets.
The 20% increment will affect all categories of public transport, including intra-city “trotro” services, shared taxis, long-distance intercity buses, and haulage services.
The Council has directed all commercial transport providers to strictly adhere to the new fare structure and display the revised tariffs visibly at their respective loading stations.
The upcoming fare hike comes just three months after transport operators reduced fares in May 2025, a move that was largely influenced by earlier fuel price reductions and government engagement with transport sector stakeholders.
