Fuel Price Reduction: Gov’t Absorbs GHS 2 per Litre of Diesel, GHS 0.36 per Litre of Petrol
Government has announced temporary relief measures to cushion consumers against rising fuel prices, following heightened volatility on the international petroleum market.
Effective April 16, 2026, the start of the next pricing window, the State will absorb GH¢2 per litre on diesel and GH¢0.36 per litre on petrol, in a move aimed at easing cost pressures on households, transport operators and businesses.
The intervention, approved by Cabinet, was disclosed in a statement issued by Government Communications Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on Wednesday, April 16.
According to the statement, the decision responds to recent spikes in global oil prices, which have translated into higher ex-pump prices on the domestic market, with implications for transportation costs and overall economic activity.
“Effective April 16, 2026, which is the next pricing window, the Government will absorb GH¢2 per litre on diesel and GH¢0.36 per litre on petrol,” the statement noted.
“This intervention is intended to cushion customers and ease the cost burden on households, transport operators, and businesses.”
Government indicated that the measure will remain in place for one month, during which authorities will monitor developments on the global market and assess the need for further policy action.
It added that the move forms part of broader efforts to stabilise prices and safeguard livelihoods amid external shocks.
“Government remains committed to maintaining price stability, protecting livelihoods, and supporting Ghana’s economic recovery in the face of external shocks,” the statement said.
