Tuchel Backs Bellingham’s ‘Rage’ As England Seek Response Against Czech Republic

  • Tuchel Backs Bellingham’s ‘Rage’ As England Seek Response Against Czech Republic

Thomas Tuchel has backed Jude Bellingham to channel his competitive anger into performance as England seek to recover from their 3-2 Nations League defeat to Spain.

The England manager said the Real Madrid midfielder often improves when opponents provoke him, describing controlled aggression as an important part of the 23-year-old’s game.

“He likes that. He gets better if that happens,” Tuchel said.

“It’s better if he plays with a bit of rage. It’s what he does. I think sometimes he is looking for these moments to get his fire going.”

Bellingham was one of England’s most influential players during Saturday’s defeat at Wembley, helping the hosts remain competitive until the closing stages and forcing Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón into a late save.

His performance offered encouragement to Tuchel even as the result exposed weaknesses in England’s defensive organisation.

Bellingham’s intensity was illustrated by a heated exchange with his Real Madrid colleague Marc Cucurella. Tuchel said club relationships become secondary once the midfielder represents his country.

“He wants to win. He doesn’t know any team-mates,” Tuchel said. “He is still friends with them but not for the 90 minutes.”

The remark captures both Bellingham’s value and the challenge of managing him. His emotional energy can lift the tempo of a match and pull team-mates into the contest. Left uncontrolled, however, the same intensity can result in unnecessary confrontations, disciplinary risks and energy being diverted away from tactical responsibilities.

Tuchel’s task is therefore not to remove the anger from Bellingham’s game, but to ensure it remains productive.

The midfielder has become central to England’s attacking structure because of his ability to carry the ball through pressure, arrive late in the penalty area and impose himself on high-intensity matches.

He was named England’s Player of the Year for a second successive season during the week, strengthening his position as one of the defining figures of Tuchel’s team.

The defeat to Spain nevertheless showed that individual force cannot compensate indefinitely for collective weaknesses.

England scored twice against one of Europe’s strongest sides and pressed for an equaliser, but conceding three goals at home placed renewed attention on their defensive balance.

Tuesday’s meeting with the Czech Republic will consequently be about more than securing a positive result. Tuchel must demonstrate that England can preserve the attacking intensity displayed against Spain while becoming more disciplined without the ball.

Bellingham is likely to be central to that response, although Tuchel said the medical team would first evaluate his physical condition.

“We will need to check with the physios,” the England manager said. “We will not put Jude at risk.”

The caution reflects the workload being placed on elite players who move repeatedly between demanding club and international schedules.

Bellingham’s importance to both Real Madrid and England makes workload management particularly sensitive. Starting him against the Czech Republic could strengthen England’s midfield, but risking fatigue or injury at this stage of the campaign would carry consequences beyond one Nations League fixture.

Tuchel’s comments also reveal the type of England side he is attempting to develop: emotionally engaged, aggressive and unwilling to retreat when challenged.

Yet “rage” can only be an advantage when supported by control. England require Bellingham’s fire, but they also need tactical discipline, defensive security and the judgement to know when confrontation helps the team.

Against the Czech Republic, the question will be whether England can transform the frustration of defeat into a more complete performance retaining Bellingham’s intensity without allowing emotion to become a substitute for structure.
