Communications Minister Gives More Time to DSTV Pricing Review Committee
Communications Minister, Sam George, has granted a one-week extension to the stakeholder committee reviewing DSTV pricing in the country.
The committee, which began its work on September 8, is now expected to deliver its final report on September 29, according to a statement issued by the National Communications Authority (NCA) on Tuesday.
The NCA said the extension would enable the committee to “complete its work and ensure that its recommendations adequately address the concerns raised by the Minister” regarding subscription charges.
The committee’s mandate includes developing a shared understanding of DSTV pricing for the Ghanaian market, proposing commercially viable measures acceptable to all parties, and formulating a roadmap to curb cross-border piracy of DSTV decoders and services from Nigeria.
The regulator noted that while the committee has made “significant progress” since its inauguration, more time was required to finalise consultations and harmonise stakeholder positions.
The review comes against the backdrop of growing discontent over the affordability of DSTV packages for households and businesses in Ghana, as well as persistent challenges with illegal access to the service through imports from neighbouring Nigeria.
