Chelsea and Palmeiras Advance in Thrilling Club World Cup Showdowns

Chelsea FC and Palmeiras secured their spots in the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup after dramatic victories over SL Benfica and Botafogo, respectively.

Chelsea Triumphs Over Benfica

In a weather-delayed match at Bank of America Stadium, Chelsea defeated SL Benfica 4-1 after extra time. The Premier League side took the lead in the 64th minute with a clever free-kick from Reece James. However, Benfica equalized in stoppage time when Angel Di Maria converted a penalty awarded after a VAR review.

With Benfica reduced to ten men following Gianluca Prestianni’s red card early in extra time, Chelsea capitalized on their advantage. Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall each found the net, sealing a 4-1 victory for the Blues. Chelsea will now face Palmeiras in the quarter-finals on July 4 at Lincoln Financial Field.

Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca praised his team’s performance, while defender Levi Colwill emphasized their determination to win. Moises Caicedo was named the Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match.

In a tense Brazilian clash, Palmeiras narrowly defeated Botafogo 1-0, thanks to a late extra-time goal from substitute Paulinho. The match, marked by a strong defensive display from both teams, saw Palmeiras control most of the chances. Paulinho’s goal came in the 100th minute, with a well-placed shot that delighted the Palmeiras fans.

Despite losing captain Gustavo Gomez to a late red card, Palmeiras held on for the win, advancing to face Chelsea in the next round. The victory continues Palmeiras’ strong legacy, having previously won the Copa Libertadores in 2020 and 2021.

As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on the upcoming quarter-final clash between Chelsea and Palmeiras, where both teams will aim for glory in the prestigious Club World Cup.
