Ranked: The Most Environmentally Active Countries in the World

Arka researched the 50 most populated countries in the world to identify the ones with the most active environmentalists.
Data about the population, environmental political parties and Non-Governmental organizations (NGOs) was used to quantify the activity of environmentalists.
The United States hosts the most active environmentalists, with a composite score of 69. It has the most environmental non-governmental organizations (NGOs) of 1800. For 1 million Americans there are around 5 environmental organizations. American environmentalists are also very active in politics, with 12 political parties.
India is the second most environmentally active country in the world, with a score of 68. For 1.4 billion Indians, there are 1200 environmental NGOs. There is almost one environmental organization for 1 million people. India has 2.4 times less political parties than the US, and
Germany takes third place, with a composite score of 62.4. German environmentalists are the most active in politics, with 14 political parties for 83.5 million habitants. This country has 18 environmental organizations and parties for 1 million people living there.

Canada takes fourth place, with a composite score of 51.2. It has 30 environmental organizations for 1 million Canadians, taking the highest number in the ranking. Compared to the US, its NGO corps is less in number, with around 1200 environmental organizations.
China, the world’s most populated country, takes the fifth spot, with a composite score of 46.9. In the ranking, it has the least amount of organizations for 1 million people (0.4). Environmentalists are the least active politically in this ranking. With 2 political parties and 500 NGOs, its placement on the list is mostly backed by its high population.
The UK takes sixth place, with a composite score of 38.2. For a million people, it has 16 organizations, which is 40 times more than China. This ratio is backed by 68 million citizens of the UK, 7 environmental political parties and 1100 Non-Governmental Organizations.
Brazil, with a score of 35.6, takes the seventh place in the ranking. It has half as many environmental NGOs, compared to the US, but is not too far behind, when it comes to the organization-to-population ratio. Brazil’s environmentalists are relatively active in politics, with 6 parties for 216 million people.
France takes the eighth place, with a score of 34. French environmental organizations and parties are not much different from Brazil’s. France has a higher organization-to-population ratio (15.4), compared to Brazil’s 4.2.
Poland takes the ninth spot on the list, with a score of 33.3. Poland has the exact same number of parties and NGOs as France. But with a lesser population of 37 million, it has 1.7 times more organizations for 1 million people.
Colombia finishes the top 10, with a score of 31.8. With the same amount of NGOs and parties as Brazil, it has around 4 times less population. It has 17 organizations for 1 million Colombians, which is 4.2 times more than Brazil.
A spokesperson from Arka commented on the study. “The activity of environmentalists is not solely based on the organization-to-population ratio. What affects the activity the most is the amount of potential members of parties. In the case of Colombia and Brazil, where Colombia’s organization-to-population ratio is higher, its activity is lower, because of its lower population. ”
