CAF Establishes New Infrastructure Department to Enhance Stadium Development Across Africa

In a significant move to bolster football infrastructure across the continent, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the establishment of a new Infrastructure Department within its Competitions Department and Events Division. This initiative aligns with the vision of CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that all Member Associations can host home matches within their own countries.

The newly created Infrastructure Department aims to support Member Associations with various aspects of football infrastructure, including the construction of new stadiums, renovation of existing facilities, and the approval processes for stadiums. A Senior Infrastructure Manager has been appointed to oversee this critical function, encouraging direct collaboration between Member Associations and the department for streamlined support.

CAF emphasizes early engagement with the Infrastructure Department as crucial for compliance with both CAF and FIFA standards. This proactive approach will ensure that stadium-related projects receive the necessary guidance from the outset, ultimately enhancing the quality and safety of facilities across Africa.

To facilitate the approval of stadiums for CAF or FIFA matches, the following protocols have been established:

1. Pre-Inspection by the National Club Licensing Manager (CLM): The CLM will conduct a preliminary inspection using the CAF CLOP platform. A detailed report, including high-quality photos and videos, must be submitted to CAF.

2. CAF Evaluation and Decision: CAF will assess the CLM’s report to determine whether a full on-site inspection is required. If deemed unnecessary, CAF will issue a decision based on the available data.

3. Conditions for a CAF Inspection: If a full inspection is necessary, an expert team, including a Sport Infrastructure Specialist and Safety and Security Expert, will be dispatched. The Member Association requesting the inspection will cover all associated costs.

4. CAF Decision: Following the inspection, CAF will provide a decision regarding the stadium’s eligibility to host competitions. Any rejections will include justifications for necessary improvements.

This strategic initiative is poised to significantly enhance the quality of football infrastructure across Africa, promoting better conditions for players and fans alike. As CAF continues to prioritize the development of football on the continent, this new department will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the sport.
