GFA Congress Approves Extension of Presidential Term Limit to Three Terms
In a landmark decision, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has approved an amendment to extend the presidential term limit from two to three terms during its 31st Ordinary Congress held in Prampram. This significant change aims to enhance stability and continuity within the leadership of Ghanaian football.
The Congress, which is held annually before the start of the football season, brings together delegates from all 124 member associations to review progress, present financial reports, and set strategic directions for the future of the sport. Among the most debated topics was the proposal to amend the term limit, which has reportedly received backing from FIFA and aligns with the statutes of both FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The decision to allow a president to serve up to 12 years reflects a shift towards global governance norms in football, potentially reshaping the leadership landscape in Ghana. Current GFA President Kurt Okraku, who has already completed one term, stands to benefit from this amendment, as it would allow him to pursue additional years in office.
Okraku and other GFA officials believe that this reform will enable the president to implement long-term development plans and strategies, fostering a more robust football environment in Ghana.
