Taxpayers get extra days to file returns as GRA responds to flood disruptions

The Ghana Revenue Authority has extended the deadline for filing selected tax returns to Monday, July 6, 2026, following the severe flooding that disrupted movement, businesses and public services across parts of Accra.

The extension affects taxpayers who were expected to submit returns by June 30, 2026, but were unable to do so because of the impact of the floods.

The GRA said the decision was taken in recognition of the difficulties faced by taxpayers after heavy rains left parts of the capital flooded, limiting access to offices, disrupting business operations and affecting the ability of some individuals and companies to meet statutory filing obligations on time.

“The GRA has extended the filing deadline to Monday, July 6, 2026,” the Authority stated.

The revenue agency assured taxpayers that those who file within the extended period will not face penalties for late submission.

The relief is expected to benefit businesses, individuals and tax representatives who may have been affected by the flooding, particularly those operating in parts of Accra where transport routes, commercial centres and offices were disrupted.

The extension comes after torrential rains over the weekend and into Monday caused widespread flooding in parts of the capital, damaging property, disrupting road movement and forcing some businesses to suspend operations.

For many taxpayers, the June 30 deadline coincided with the immediate aftermath of the flood disruption, creating practical difficulties for filing and payment processes, despite the availability of digital tax filing platforms.

The GRA’s decision is therefore intended to prevent affected taxpayers from being penalised for delays caused by circumstances beyond their control.

The move also reflects the growing importance of administrative flexibility during emergencies, especially when climate-related disruptions affect business continuity and public service access.

Tax compliance depends not only on enforcement, but also on the ability of taxpayers to access systems, records, professional services and payment channels within required timelines.

Where floods damage offices, disrupt internet access, delay movement or interrupt business operations, meeting filing obligations can become difficult, particularly for small businesses and taxpayers that rely on accountants, consultants or physical records.

The extension gives affected taxpayers additional time to organise their documentation, access the GRA’s online platforms and complete the required filings without attracting sanctions.

It also signals that the Authority is prepared to adjust compliance timelines when extraordinary events interfere with normal business activity.

The GRA has in recent years intensified digital tax administration through online filing and payment systems, but the latest flooding shows that even digital compliance can be affected when offices, homes, transport systems and business operations are disrupted.

The decision is likely to be welcomed by businesses and tax practitioners, who had raised concerns about the impact of the floods on statutory deadlines.

For taxpayers, the extension does not remove the obligation to file. It only shifts the deadline to July 6, meaning affected individuals and entities are expected to complete their submissions within the new window.

The Authority is expected to continue encouraging taxpayers to use its digital platforms to file returns and make payments where applicable.

The extension comes at a time when government revenue mobilisation remains central to Ghana’s fiscal consolidation programme, making timely tax filing and payment important for public finances.

However, the GRA’s response also recognises that compliance systems must remain practical and responsive when citizens and businesses face emergencies.

The July 6 deadline now gives affected taxpayers a short window to regularise their filings and avoid penalties.

For businesses still recovering from the floods, the immediate priority will be to restore operations while meeting their tax obligations within the revised timeline.
