Senegal becomes first African side to name final squad for World Cup

Senegal have announced their final squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, becoming the first African team to do so.

Bayern Munich star Sadio Mane leads the African champions’ squad, which also includes Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy and Kalidou Koulibaly.

Head coach Aliou Cisse has called up the majority of the players who helped Senegal win their first Africa Cup of Nations trophy earlier this year in Cameroon.

Senegal qualified for the global mundial after beating Egypt in the African playoffs to secure one of Africa’s five tickets.

Senegal, making their third appearance at the Mundial, are in Group A with Qatar, Senegal, and Netherlands and will be hoping to make a statement after their group stage exit at the 2018 edition in Russia.

The Teranga Lions start their campaign on November 21 against Netherlands, followed by games against the host nation Qatar and then Ecuador.
