Serie A Matches Postponed Following the Death of Pope Francis
The Italian top flight, Serie A, has announced the postponement of four matches scheduled for Monday in response to the death of Pope Francis. In a statement, the league confirmed that the games will be rescheduled to a later date, acknowledging the profound impact of the Pope’s passing on the nation.
The affected matches include Udinese’s game against Torino, Fiorentina’s visit to Cagliari, Genoa’s clash with Lazio, and Juventus’ trip to Parma. The rescheduling of these fixtures comes at a challenging time, as the season reaches its conclusion and matches may conflict with the Champions League semifinals.
In addition to the senior fixtures, Serie A has also postponed matches in its youth league. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) declared that all games across professional and amateur football on Monday would be rescheduled to honor the Pope.
The FIGC praised Pope Francis as “an example of Christian charity and dignity in suffering, always close to the world of football.” The Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis, a passionate football fan, passed away at the age of 88, prompting an outpouring of tributes from across the sporting community.
