Kotoka: GACL Repurposing Terminal 2 Amid Growing Passenger Traffic

Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) is making steady progress on the repurposing of Terminal 2 at Kotoka International Airport (KIA), a move aimed at easing pressure on Terminal 3 and optimizing existing infrastructure to accommodate rising passenger traffic.

The project, which forms part of GACL’s broader strategy to position Ghana as a key aviation hub in West Africa, will enable Terminal 2 to handle both domestic and international operations. The initiative also seeks to maximize underutilized spaces within the airport to improve efficiency.

Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, Managing Director of GACL, has underscored the importance of continuous engagement with stakeholders to ensure a seamless transition. “Airlines must be operationally prepared to integrate smoothly into the revamped Terminal 2, and we are working closely with them throughout the process,” she stated.

On March 19, 2025, GACL hosted airline representatives for a walkthrough of the ongoing works. Industry stakeholders expressed confidence in the project, providing feedback to support the airport’s operational readiness, activation, and transition (ORAT) strategy.

The repurposing of Terminal 2 is expected to alleviate congestion at Terminal 3, particularly during peak hours, while also preparing KIA to accommodate new carriers in the coming months. Once completed, the project will represent a significant step in Ghana’s efforts to enhance aviation capacity and improve passenger experience.
