CHAN 2024: Kenya Holds Angola to Draw While DR Congo Claims Vital Win Over Zambia

The TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024 witnessed thrilling action on Thursday, featuring a resilient performance from Kenya against Angola and a commanding victory for DR Congo over Zambia.

Ten-Man Kenya Holds Angola to a Dramatic Draw

In a gripping Group A clash at the Moi International Sports Centre, ten-man Kenya demonstrated remarkable resilience to secure a 1-1 draw against Angola. The Harambee Stars were forced to play with a man down for over 70 minutes after Marvin Nabwire was sent off in the 21st minute.

Angola started the match brightly, taking the lead in the 7th minute through Jó Paciência, who slotted home a low shot following a well-coordinated move. However, Kenya quickly responded when Austin Odhiambo won a penalty after a VAR review confirmed a foul in the box. The Gor Mahia playmaker converted the spot-kick, leveling the match at 1-1 in the 12th minute.

The match took a dramatic turn when Nabwire received a red card, forcing Kenya to adjust their tactics to contain Angola’s possession-heavy play. Goalkeeper Byrne Omondi made several crucial saves to keep the score level, including denying Aguinaldo Matias and Jó Paciência in the second half.

Despite being a man down, Kenya created opportunities, with substitute Chrispine Erambo and Sylvester Owino coming close to scoring. Angola thought they had snatched a late victory when Kaporal scored in stoppage time, but the goal was ruled out for offside by VAR.

The draw propelled Kenya to the top of Group A with four points from two matches, while Angola remained with one point, needing a win in their final game against DR Congo to keep their hopes alive.

DR Congo Ends Winless Streak with Victory Over Zambia

Earlier in the day, DR Congo reignited their CHAN campaign with a clinical 2-0 victory over Zambia at the Nyayo National Stadium. Goals from Ibrahim Matobo and substitute Horso Mwaku marked a significant turnaround for the Leopards, ending a five-match winless streak in the tournament.

After a goalless first half, DR Congo found their rhythm, with Matobo scoring in the 51st minute from a well-executed play. The Leopards doubled their lead in the 71st minute when Mwaku capitalized on a fast break to seal the victory.

Zambia struggled to find their footing, with several missed opportunities and a lack of penetration in the attacking third. Coach Avram Grant’s attempts to inspire his team with substitutions fell short, resulting in their first-ever group stage defeat in CHAN history.

With this victory, DR Congo joined Kenya and Morocco at the top of Group A, all on three points but separated by goal difference. The Leopards’ performance showcased their determination and tactical maturity, crucial for their quest to advance in the tournament.

Group A Standings and Upcoming Matches

Following the day’s matches, Group A is tightly contested, with Kenya, DR Congo, and Morocco all vying for a place in the knockout stages. Kenya will face Angola later tonight, while DR Congo’s final group match against Morocco promises to be a potential decider for advancement
