Sports and Recreation Minister-Designate Pledges Thorough Probe into Controversial 2023 African Games Expenditure
In a move to address growing concerns over the financial management of the 2023 African Games, Sports and Recreation Minister-designate Kofi Adams has pledged that Parliament will thoroughly investigate the expenditures associated with Ghana’s recent hosting of the continental event.
The Games, which took place earlier in 2024, have been mired in controversy, particularly surrounding the hefty price tag of over $245 million. Former Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif faced widespread backlash over the government’s handling of the finances, with $195 million allocated to infrastructure, $15 million spent on feeding athletes during the 15-day event, and another $48 million earmarked for operational costs, as justified by the Local Organising Committee.
Public outrage intensified as several organizations, including the Forum for Accountable Governance, formally petitioned the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to conduct an investigation into the financial dealings related to the Games.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the Accra Sports Stadium during the GHALCA elections, Adams reassured journalists that a comprehensive probe would adhere to due process. “I remember in Parliament, issues were raised about it. The only unfortunate thing is that we couldn’t take the report of the committee that looked into areas of sports before the 8th Parliament terminated,” he stated.
With the 9th Parliament now in session, Adams indicated that there would be a renewed focus on the matter. “We can see what we can do about that report, whether it will be retabled or if the issues could be referred to the committee again for further examination and resubmission for consideration,” he explained.
The Minister-designate emphasized that no options would be off the table and called for patience as the processes unfold.
Adams is set to officially assume office pending parliamentary approval of his nomination, and the upcoming discussions promise to shed light on the contentious financial aspects of the African Games.
