Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams Addresses Concerns Following the Death of Nigerian Boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun
In the wake of the tragic passing of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun, Ghana’s Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Iddie Adams, has taken a proactive stance to ensure that the incident does not sour relations between Ghanaian and Nigerian boxing communities.
Speaking during an interview on April 1, 2025, with Sporty FM, Adams emphasized the importance of unity and mutual respect in sports amid concerns of potential tensions.
Oluwasegun died after an eight-round international light-heavyweight bout against Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu, which took place at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
Following his death at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBC), led by President Dr. Rafiu Oladipo, has requested an autopsy report from the Ghana Boxing Authority.
Minister Adams addressed worries that the Nigerian boxing community might hold resentment towards Ghanaian boxers, insisting that such sentiments are unfounded.
He reassured fans and athletes alike that the bonds between the two nations’ sporting fraternities remain strong and that proactive measures will be implemented to foster cooperation and support.
The unfortunate incident has reignited discussions about athlete safety and the competitive history between Ghana and Nigeria, particularly in boxing, where both nations have produced world-class talent.
As both communities navigate this challenging period, Adams’s call for solidarity is seen as crucial in maintaining the spirit of sportsmanship.
