SSNIT Board Inauguration: Finance Minister Warns Against Politically-Motivated Asset Sales

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has inaugurated a new Board of Trustees for the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), urging the members to uphold prudence, integrity, and transparency in the management of the country’s pension funds.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony held in Accra, Dr. Forson underscored the critical role of SSNIT in securing the financial future of Ghanaian workers and retirees, describing it as “an institution we will all need one day—when we retire.”

The Minister reminded the Board of the enormous responsibility placed on their shoulders, stressing that their decisions will directly affect the lives of millions of contributors.

“The people of Ghana have entrusted their future into your hands. Your actions must reflect the weight of that responsibility,” Dr. Forson said.

He expressed concern over some previous investment decisions made by the Trust, noting that the new Board must adopt a more strategic and accountable approach. In a direct warning, Dr. Forson cautioned against the politically influenced disposal of SSNIT assets.

“Please don’t sell state assets to politicians. The President will not accept it, and as your sector Minister, I will be the first to oppose it,” he warned.

Assuring the Board of government’s commitment to supporting the Fund, Dr. Forson noted that all outstanding payments owed to SSNIT by the government had been cleared. He pledged continued collaboration between the Finance Ministry and the Trust to ensure its financial sustainability.

Chairperson of the newly inaugurated Board, Nana Ansah Sasraku III, acknowledged the significance of their mandate and assured stakeholders of their commitment to responsible stewardship.

“We are prepared, united, and committed to ensure that the trust resources are managed with integrity and foresight,” he stated.

Members of the SSNIT Board of Trustees are:

  2. Hon. Thomas Nyarko Ampem, MP – Member
