SSNIT’s 2025 Pension League Table Exposes Deep Divide in Retirement Incomes
Ghana’s pension landscape has once again come under the spotlight as the 2025 Monthly Pension League Table published by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) lays bare the gulf between the highest and lowest earners.
According to the data, the country’s highest-paid pensioner currently receives GH¢201,792.37 per month, while the lowest-paid pensioner takes home GH¢514.41. The difference means the top pension is nearly 392 times larger than the smallest, underscoring the stark income inequalities embedded in the system.
The report further shows contrasting adjustments under the 2025 indexation process. Lower-income pensioners saw their benefits increase by more than 25 percent, while the highest earners recorded a comparatively modest rise of about 8 percent. For instance, the highest pension rose from GH¢186,777.58 in December 2024 to GH¢201,792.37 in January 2025, whereas the lowest pension moved from GH¢409.10 to GH¢514.41.
SSNIT’s published tables highlight the ten highest and ten lowest pension earners under both Act 766 and PNDC Law 247. The top tier ranges between GH¢58,031.91 and GH¢201,792.37, while the bottom bracket spans GH¢514.41 to GH¢669.54.
While the figures reflect the contributory nature of Ghana’s pension scheme — linking benefits to pre-retirement earnings — they also reignite concerns over adequacy, equity, and sustainability. Analysts warn that with inflation and living costs continuing to climb, the lowest earners risk falling further behind despite the relatively higher percentage increases.
