Standard Chartered commemorates International Women’s Day with adolescent girls

Standard Chartered Bank Ghana PLC has commemorated International Women’s Day 2023 with a mentoring activity where 50 female employees of the bank volunteered their skills to engage 100 adolescent school – girls at their head office. The girls were engaged in a speed mentoring to empower them to embrace equity. These girls were selected from five (5) beneficiary schools namely; Osu Presby, Kanda AMA Basic, Islamic Training Basic, Kanda Estate 3 & 5 and Ring Road Basic Schools.

The Bank partnered with United Way Ghana for this activity. This partnership forms part of the Bank and United Way Ghana’s intervention to promote Sustainable Development Goal 4 – Quality Education, Goal 5 – Gender Equality and Goal 10 – Reduced Inequalities.  The event aimed at addressing relevant issues of gender equality, gender-based reproductive health and empowering adolescent girls to reach for the stars. For the first part of the programme, the female staff of Standard Chartered engaged the adolescent girls in small groups for the mentoring sessions.

Mrs. Yvonne Gyebi, Head, Consumer, Private and Business Banking at Standard Chartered Bank Ghana PLC led the female volunteers. In her address to the young girls, she encouraged them to be confident, courageous and never give up on their dreams. She reminded them to set clear goals, be determined and stay focused.

Dr. Betty Banca, Manager at the Adolescent Clinic, Accra Regional Hospital run a Medical Camp for the girls focusing on Adolescent Reproductive Health. The girls each received a hygiene pack of sanitary towels and a deodorant stick.

The Executive Director of United Way Ghana, Mr Felix Kissiedu-Addi, reiterated United Way Ghana’s commitment to ensuring that girls and women receive the right information and resources at the right time to give them a good start for success.
