Step Publishers and Inspire Today Champion Menstrual Hygiene in Ghana
In an empowering move to mark World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2024, Step Publishers, a leading figure in Ghana’s publishing industry, has teamed up with the NGO Inspire Today. Together, they have reached out to support over 4,000 menstruating girls across the Mallam cluster of schools.
The collaboration involved distributing sanitary towels, reading materials, and other personal hygiene products to the Weija Gbawe municipal directorate students. This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote literacy and gender parity in education within the region.
Sam Nyarko Mensah, Head of Publications at Step Publishers, emphasized the significance of their partnership. “Joining hands with Inspire Today allowed us to make a meaningful contribution towards the education and health of thousands of girls. It was a privilege to support their growth into informed adults through these essential supplies,” he said.
Etornam Sey, the Founder and Executive Director of Inspire Today, expressed deep appreciation for Step Publishers’ consistent backing over the past five years. “Our financial constraints as an NGO make partnerships like these invaluable. They enable us to tackle the challenges of menstrual hygiene head-on, ensuring that every girl, regardless of her background, can attend school with dignity,” Sey remarked.
Menstrual Hygiene Day, initiated by the German NGO WASH United in 2014, is celebrated annually on May 28 to raise awareness and combat the stigma surrounding menstruation. This year’s theme, ‘Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld’, calls for global solidarity to ensure all individuals can access the necessary resources and education to manage menstruation effectively.
The efforts by Step Publishers and Inspire Today not only highlight the ongoing challenges faced by menstruating girls in low-income countries but also demonstrate the powerful impact of corporate and NGO collaboration in advancing public health and education.
