Roughly Only 1 out of 10 Ghanaians can Purchase a House Without Assistance
Approximately 1.65 million Ghanaians out of the country’s estimated 33 million population are able to purchase a house without financial assistance from the government or private institutions, according to the Minister for Works and Housing, Kenneth Adjei.
The figure, disclosed at a Thought Leadership Forum on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, highlights that just 5% of the population has the means to own a home outright. In other words, for every ten Ghanaians, only one has the financial capacity to purchase a property.
Speaking at the forum, organised by TV3 under the theme “Blueprint to Brick: Making Affordable Housing Work,” Mr Adjei underscored the urgency of addressing Ghana’s housing deficit.
“Housing needs require urgent and collective action. Under the current circumstances, the Mahama administration is prioritising the development of affordable, low-cost housing. Every Ghanaian deserves a safe, decent home. I am confident that with concerted effort, President Mahama will turn this vision into reality,” he said.
The Minister outlined several initiatives being pursued, including the security services housing programme and the national rental assistance scheme, which are aimed at bridging the affordability gap and reducing the national housing shortfall.
He reiterated government’s commitment to rolling out a Low-Cost Housing Project for public sector and government employees, describing it as part of a broader agenda to expand access to affordable accommodation and raise living standards.
“The housing deficit requires innovative and sustainable solutions,” Mr Adjei said, assuring stakeholders that pragmatic steps are being taken to improve affordability across the sector.
