U-20 World Cup: Morocco and Argentina Advance to Last 16; Cuba Earns First Ever Points at A World Cup

The FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile has seen thrilling action as Morocco and Argentina secure their spots in the knockout stage, while Cuba makes history with a remarkable comeback against Italy. The tournament is proving to be a showcase of emerging talent and dramatic moments.

Morocco Stuns Brazil to Top Group

In a stunning upset, Morocco defeated Brazil 2-1, confirming their place at the top of Group C. After a tightly contested first half, Morocco surged ahead with a spectacular scissor kick from Othmane Maamma. They doubled their lead shortly after with a brilliant strike from Yassir Zabiri. Though Brazil’s Iago Teodoro converted a late penalty, it wasn’t enough to change the outcome.

Morocco’s coach expressed pride in the team’s performance, highlighting their ability to compete against a traditional powerhouse. “This result is a testament to our growth as a team,” he said.

Argentina Dominates Australia

Argentina displayed their attacking prowess with a commanding 4-1 victory over Australia. Early goals from Alejo Sarco and Tomas Perez set the tone, while a late flurry of strikes from Ian Subiabre and Santino Andino sealed the deal. Despite Australia’s spirited efforts to get back into the game, their attempts were thwarted by Argentina’s solid defense.

Daniel Bennie, an Australian winger, reflected on the match, stating, “We just need to move on to the next game and win it.”

Cuba Makes History with Draw Against Italy

Cuba etched their name in U-20 World Cup history by earning their first-ever point in the tournament after battling back from a two-goal deficit against Italy. After Italy’s Andrea Natali and Jamal Iddrissou put the Azzurini ahead, Cuba capitalized on their numerical advantage to secure two penalties, both converted by Michael Camejo.

Camejo expressed his pride, stating, “I feel really proud… now we’ll look ahead.” His achievement marks him as the first player to score two penalties in a single U-20 World Cup match since Erik Lamela in 2011.

Spain and Mexico Share Points in Thrilling Draw

In another Group C match, Spain and Mexico played to a 2-2 draw. Gilberto Mora’s late equalizer for Mexico ensured they shared the spoils, with both teams showcasing their attacking flair. Spain’s Iker Bravo was a standout performer, but it was Mora’s late efforts that stole the spotlight.

Mora, at just 16 years and 352 days, became the youngest goalscorer of the tournament so far, a testament to the bright future of young footballers on this global stage.
