Teen Sensation Jakub Mensik Shocks Novak Djokovic to Claim Miami Open Title
19-year-old Jakub Mensik of the Czech Republic triumphed over his childhood idol, Novak Djokovic, to win the 2025 Miami Open. The victory is particularly remarkable considering Mensik nearly withdrew from the tournament just hours before his first-round match due to a knee injury.
Mensik’s journey to the final began on March 20 when he visited the referee’s office to announce his withdrawal after struggling with pain that made it difficult for him to walk or run. However, with the official absent for lunch, he sought advice from a physiotherapist who assessed his injury as manageable. After receiving treatment, Mensik decided to compete, stating, “I was like, ‘OK, let’s try it.’”
Against all odds, Mensik not only played but excelled, dropping only two sets on his way to the final. His impressive run included victories over British number one Jack Draper and fourth seed Taylor Fritz, showcasing his remarkable talent and determination.
The final match against Djokovic, a seasoned 24-time Grand Slam champion, was a tightly contested battle. Mensik managed to clinch the title with a score of 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4) in a sticky and humid environment in Florida. The victory marks Mensik’s first ATP Tour title and solidifies his rising status in the tennis world, propelling him to a career-high ranking of 24th.
Djokovic, who was aiming to become only the third player in the Open era to secure 100 singles titles, now faces a longer wait to reach this milestone. The Serbian star, who won his first title when Mensik was just 10 months old, praised the young Czech after the match, acknowledging the bright future ahead for him.
