Telcos begin to block SIM Cards in compliance to Communication Ministry’s directive

Telecommunication companies in the country; MTN, Vodafone and AirtelTigo have commenced the deactivation process of SIM Cards that have completed the first stage but yet to complete the second stage of the ongoing SIM card registration exercise.

The deactivation of the said SIM Cards is in compliance to the November 11, 2022 directive issued by the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation.

It is estimated that, some 9 million Ghanaians will be affected by the directive.

In a statement issued by the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications on Wednesday, November 30, 2022, it stated that services to be affected as a result of the deactivation of SIM Cards include; voice, data, SMS, USSD, mobile money services and emergency services.

“The Chamber wishes to once again encourage all subscribers who have acquired Ghana Cards but are yet to complete Stage 2 (biometric capture) to do so without delay.

“It is imperative that cherished customers of the networks are not barred from using voice, data, USSD, mobile money services and access to emergency services among others,” read parts of the statement.
