We were on top for 10 to 12 years – Andre Ayew opens up on Black Stars struggles

Black Stars captain Andre Ayew has offered insights into the recent struggles faced by the team, expressing confidence in their ability to bounce back despite a challenging period.

Following consecutive exits from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and a string of poor results, concerns have arisen within the Ghanaian football community regarding the team’s performance and prospects.

Ayew, a significant member of the squad in these torrid times, acknowledged the team’s recent difficulties but remained optimistic about their potential for resurgence.

“I think we need to stay calm. A lot of things have happened. There’s not much to be said at the moment,” Ayew told Nana Ama Agyemang on Chasing Gold with Nana Aba.

“I have been in the team for a very long time so we need to stay calm, learn from what went right and what went wrong, keep working hard to make our nation proud because it is something very special.

While acknowledging the team’s recent poor form, Ayew highlighted the cyclical nature of football, noting that Ghana had enjoyed a period of dominance in previous years. He stressed the importance of perseverance, hard work, and a bit of luck in turning their fortunes around.

“We cannot hide behind the fact that the results lately have not been the best and we are sorry for that but I know it’s part of the game. Football is like a cycle you have moments.

“We were on top for about 10 to 12 years but now it’s other people but we need to keep working harder. We have the talent and the players, it’s just a matter of time and a little bit of luck for things to switch around,” Ayew remarked.

On Saturday evening, the former Olympique Marseille forward was on the scoresheet for Le Havre in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Ligue 1 champions Paris St-Germain, underscoring his importance for both club and country.

The 34-year-old has been a great addition for the team having joined before the 2023 AFCON which saw Ghana fail to win a single game resulting in their elimination.

Ghana’s disappointing run saw the dismissal of Chris Hughton, the then-coach whom Otto Addo has now replaced.

The Ghana skipper aims to lead the team to bounce back in their next assignment when they take on Mali and the Central African Republic in June in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
