Dumsor: President Mahama Calls Emergency Meeting on Fuel Shortage For Power Generation
President John Mahama has called for an emergency meeting between some members of the NDC transition team, Independent Power Producers (IPPs), AKSA, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), and other relevant stakeholders in the energy sector.
The emergency meeting norvanreports understand, is to find immediate solutions to the shortage of fuel for power generation in the country, so as to avert widespread power outages widely known as “dumsor”.
Ghana has previously grappled with “dumsor,” a term describing frequent and prolonged power outages that severely impact businesses and households.
The emergency meeting comes on the back of assertions by the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Yapei-Kusawgu constituency, John Jinapor, that the country currently has only five hours’ worth of fuel left.
Mr Jinapor in an earlier interview opined that the outgoing Nana-Addo-led government failed to purchase fuel despite repeated concerns and calls from the NDC transition team.
Adding that the country’s current fuel supply for power generation will not last more than two days.
“I have bad news for you. As of today, the confirmation we are receiving is that we have only five hours’ worth of fuel left,” he said.
“If you look at the heavy fuel oil and diesel fuel, we don’t have enough to last two days. So, in two days’ time, we are likely to run out of fuel. This administration has not placed any fuel orders as we speak,” he concluded.
