Ghana Falls to Nigeria in Unity Cup Semifinal Despite Strong Second-Half Performance
Ghana’s national football team put up a spirited fight but ultimately fell short against Nigeria, losing 2-1 in the semifinal of the 2025 Unity Cup. The match, held at the GTech Community Stadium, showcased Ghana’s youthful talent and determination, particularly in the second half.
The Black Stars, coached by Otto Addo, fielded a mix of experience and youth, featuring veterans like Jordan Ayew alongside debutants Aaron Essel and Christopher Bonsu Baah. The team initially struggled to find their rhythm, falling behind early when Nigeria’s Cyriel Dessers opened the scoring in the 15th minute, capitalizing on a pass from right-back Ismaila Sodiq.
Nigeria doubled their lead shortly after with an own goal from Ghana’s Razak Simpson, who deflected Seyi Ajayi’s header into his own net. Ghana’s goalkeeper Benjamin Asare made a brilliant save and managed to keep the scoreline from worsening, denying Wilfried Ndidi’s efforts before halftime.
The second half saw a revitalized Ghana side, particularly after the introduction of Caleb Yirenkyi and Brandon Thomas Asante, who replaced Kamaradini Mamudu and Kwame Opoku. A tactical shift brought Ebenezer Annan into the left wing-back position, allowing Gideon Mensah to move into midfield.
In the 70th minute, Brandon Thomas Asante scored a stunning goal, connecting with a cross from Annan and bringing Ghana back into contention. The Black Stars pushed hard for an equalizer, creating several chances through Ayew, Bonsu Baah, and Mohammed Gadafi Fuseini, but they were unable to find the back of the net.
Despite their valiant effort, Nigeria held on to secure the victory and advance to the final. Ghana’s young squad will now face Trinidad and Tobago in the third-place match on Saturday, May 31, 2025, as they look to conclude the tournament on a high note.
