A Number Guide To Paris 2024 Olympics: Stats And Facts

After the European Championship in Germany, sports-loving fans have their eyes locked on Paris ahead of the Olympic Games.

The French city is set to host the Games for the first time since they did in 1900. In that year, women were given a first-ever opportunity to compete with 22 female athletes competing at the Games.

This year, the International Olympic Committee is looking to have a gender-equal Games for the first time since the Games began in 1896.

How many countries will be in Paris?

206 countries will be competing at the Games this term and Paris will be looking to welcome them all in the next few days. The countries with bigger land sizes like India and the US, the most populous i.e China and much smaller nations like Nauru, Seychelles and others will all be there.

Africa only began competing at the Olympic Games after the Second World War in the 1940s. At that time, many of these countries were under colonial rule but still made their way there. Ghana, then Gold Coast first participated at the Olympic Games in 1952.

This year the country will be represented at the Games by only 8 athletes. Other African countries have so many more.

South Africa and Egypt have the most athletes with 150 athletes. Nigeria will have 88, Kenya have 81 while Ethiopia and Uganda have 33 and 25 respectively with a heavy concentration of track athletes.

There are more than 60 countries that have never won an Olympic medal. Some of them as notable as Bangladesh, Nepal, Yemen, Bolivia, Cambodia and Honduras.

Which is the most populous country to never win an Olympic medal?

With a population of 170 million people as of 2022, Bangladesh is the most populous country to have never won an Olympic medal.

The country has competed at the Olympic Games since the 1984 edition in Los Angeles, USA.

49 athletes have competed for the country in different sports such as track and field, swimming, shooting, archery, gymnastics and golf.

Which country has attended the fewest Olympics?

South Sudan and Kosovo have attended the fewest Olympic Games with two appearances each (2016 and 2021). South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011 while Kosovo broke away from Serbia in 2008 hence having the least number of appearances at the Games

Which country has hosted the most Olympics?

France will host for a sixth time in 2024, but the French are still behind the United States as the country that has hosted the most Olympics.

The U.S. has hosted the Olympics eight times and has another chance to host again when the competition returns to Los Angeles in 2028.

Which country has won the most medals at the Olympics?

The USA has the most medals of any country to have competed at the Games. Their medal count stands at 3105 with 1229 of them as gold medals – that amounts to almost 40% of the total medals won. The top five has Germany in 3rd, China in 4th and Great Britain in 5th place with 1035 medals. 

The African country with the most Olympic medals is Kenya at 128 medals and South Africa with 89.
