Trade Ministry gets new interim boss as Kyerematen goes for presidency

Former Trade Minister of Ghana, Alan Kyerematen, has resigned from his position to pursue a presidential bid. His resignation took effect on January 16, 2023, and has handed over to the caretaker Trade Minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor.

Kyerematen, a former trade advisor at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in Addis Ababa, briefed Jinapor about the operations of the ministry and presented his handing over notes at a brief ceremony held at the trade ministry. Jinapor, who is the substantive minister for lands and natural resources, pledged his commitment to work with all stakeholders and partners to steer the affairs of the ministry until a substantive minister is appointed.

“I pledged my commitment to work with all stakeholders and partners to steer the affairs of this Ministry until a substantive minister is appointed,” Jinapor said.

Kyerematen thanked the staff of the ministry for their hard work and support during his tenure as Trade Minister. He also expressed his confidence in Jinapor’s ability to lead the ministry effectively in his absence.

Jinapor, who has previously served as the Deputy Chief of Staff and Minister of Information, emphasized the importance of trade in Ghana’s economic growth and job creation. He stated that he will work closely with the staff of the ministry to ensure continuity in the implementation of the trade policies and programs, and to promote Ghana as an attractive destination for trade and investment.

The President’s office has yet to announce a new Trade Minister, and Jinapor will serve as the caretaker Trade Minister until a new appointment is made. The Trade Ministry is a crucial part of Ghana’s economy, and the appointment of a new Trade Minister will be closely watched by investors and trade partners.
