Fernando Alonso Reflects on His F1 Future Post-2026, Prioritizes Aston Martin’s Success

Fernando Alonso has opened up about his future in Formula 1, revealing that he will approach his racing career on a season-by-season basis after 2026. The Spanish driver emphasized that he does not want to compromise Aston Martin by committing for several years if his motivation levels change.

Since joining Aston Martin in 2023, following a two-year stint with Alpine, Alonso’s performance has been noteworthy. It was confirmed in April 2024 that he would remain with the team through 2026, aligning with the introduction of new regulations and the anticipated arrival of Honda as an engine supplier.

During the recent Saudi Arabian Grand Prix weekend, Alonso discussed his ongoing commitment to the sport and the team. “Not at 50, but I don’t know,” he said when asked how long he might continue racing. “I wanted to race this year for sure and next year for sure because of the change of regulations.”

Alonso’s enthusiasm for the upcoming rules and the team’s development has fueled his decision to extend his contract. However, he remains cautious about long-term commitments. “Now I am very motivated, but I cannot guarantee that for three or four years and compromise the team,” he explained. “So we said let’s do it until the end of 2026 and then from then on, we can sit and talk honestly about what is best for the team.”

The two-time World Champion expressed confidence in his relationship with team owner Lawrence Stroll and driver Lance Stroll. “I will always be in a position to help the team with whatever they need,” he added. “If it’s behind the wheel, I will extend the contract if they think that way and I feel motivated.”

Alonso also indicated that he intends to remain with Aston Martin even after stepping away from racing. “My contract is much longer than my racing career,” he stated. “I will stay with this team for many, many years in a different role. If that means we can win a World Championship even when I’m not behind the wheel, I will still feel very proud of the project.”

Despite Aston Martin’s recent struggles to replicate their early 2023 form, Alonso remains optimistic about the team’s future. Reflecting on his move from Alpine, he noted, “I thought Aston Martin was a better place… I do enjoy now the process that we are in and the building of this team of the future.”
