Tyson Fury makes BBC Sports Personality of the Year shortlist despite legal action threat

Tyson Fury has been included on the shortlist for the Sports Personality of the Year award, despite threatening to sue the BBC.

Fury was named on the six-person list after a year which saw the WBC heavyweight champion retain his title by knocking out Deontay Wilder in their epic trilogy fight.

The nomination comes though after Fury threatened to take legal action against the BBC if they included him on their list for the award.

Fury has had a long-standing feud with the broadcaster dating back to 2015, when he was nominated after his first world title win over Wladimir Klitschko.

A petition demanding his removal from the shortlist received more than 140,000 signatures following a number of homophobic and sexist comments, which Fury went on to apologise for during the live show.

Fury then threatened legal action after being included on the shortlist last year, and has repeated the stunt.

“It means nothing to me and I don’t need it or want it.

“In fact, they will hear from my solicitors if they do put me on the list. Give it to someone who needs it. I don’t.

“We know who the sports personality of the year is anyway – it’s me. I am the sports personality. Who does what I do, goes through a war in Las Vegas, entertains the fans, and then sings to the audience?”

Tyson was named alongside Emma Raducanu, Tom Daley, Adam Peaty, Raheem Sterling and Dame Sarah Storey.
