U-20 World Cup: Chile, Paraguay, Japan, and Ukraine Claim Victories on Opening Day
The FIFA U-20 World Cup 2025 kicked off in spectacular fashion, with hosts Chile and Paraguay snatching last-gasp victories, while Japan and Ukraine also secured impressive wins in their opening matches.
Dramatic Late Win for Chile
In a nail-biting encounter at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos in Santiago, Ian Garguez scored a sensational 97th-minute goal to give Chile a thrilling 2-1 victory over New Zealand. After a tense first half with few chances, New Zealand took control early in the second half, hitting the post through Keegan Kelly. Chile’s goalkeeper made crucial saves to keep the score level until Lautaro Millan broke the deadlock in the 54th minute with a precise finish.
However, New Zealand equalized via a penalty from Nathan Walker in the 84th minute. Just when it seemed the match would end in a draw, Garguez capitalized on a goalkeeping error to secure a historic win for the hosts, sending the crowd into raptures.
“I’m happy to have contributed with a goal. These are three important points,” said Garguez, highlighting the team’s fighting spirit.
Japan Dominates Egypt
Earlier in the day, Japan showcased their prowess with a commanding 2-0 victory over Egypt. Rion Ichihara opened the scoring with a well-taken penalty in the 29th minute after Shunsuke Saito was fouled in the box. Hisatsugu Ishii doubled Japan’s lead shortly after halftime, ensuring a comfortable win.
Ichihara expressed confidence in the team, stating, “It was a penalty that my teammates earned, and I had the responsibility to score it as captain.”
Ukraine Edges Out Korea Republic
In Group B action, Ukraine defeated Korea Republic 2-1, thanks to two quick goals from Hennadii Synchuk and Oleksandr Pyshchur in the first half. Korea responded with a powerful header from Kim Myeongjun in the 80th minute, but it wasn’t enough to change the outcome.
“It was a tough game, but we knew it was going to be hard. We want to dominate on the field,” said Synchuk after the match.
Paraguay’s Last-Minute Heroics
Paraguay rounded out the day with a thrilling 3-2 victory against Panama. After falling behind early to a goal from Martin Krug, Paraguay responded with a strike from Alexandro Maidana. Enso Gonzalez then gave them the lead with a stunning volley, but Panama equalized through Giovany Herbert. In dramatic fashion, Tiago Caballero netted a last-minute winner to secure the points for Paraguay.
