Ghana to Create Specialized Sports Schools for Young Athletes, President Mahama Announces
President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans to convert selected schools into specialized institutions aimed at nurturing young athletic talent. This initiative, announced during a meeting with the Ghana Football Association and the Black Queens, seeks to create a structured support system within the education framework.
“We will equip some of the schools around the country as sports schools, providing them with all the necessary infrastructure,” President Mahama stated. “Our goal is to assemble the best talents from these schools so they can train and study simultaneously, developing their skills to eventually join the senior national teams.”
This groundbreaking initiative is expected to offer young athletes a clear pathway to balance their academic pursuits with elite sports training, thus fostering a new generation of skilled competitors in various sports.
The announcement comes on the heels of the Black Queens’ impressive performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where they clinched a bronze medal for the first time since 2016. The team’s success highlights the potential for growth in women’s sports in Ghana, making the need for structured development even more critical.
