Otto Addo Names 25-man Squad for Crucial AFCON Qualifiers

In a high-stakes moment for the Black Stars, coach Otto Addo has announced a 25-man squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Angola and Niger.

The squad reflects a strategic blend of Premier League stars and promising local talent, highlighting the depth and resilience of Ghanaian football.

Key Selections and Changes

A significant change in the lineup is the exclusion of star midfielder Thomas Partey, who has been a central figure in past matches. Addo emphasized the importance of this decision, revealing he had a private conversation with Partey to explain his absence from the squad. “I want to protect the players,” Addo stated, acknowledging the complexities surrounding Partey’s situation.

In his place, Addo has called up three home-based players: Emmanuel Antwi from Asante Kotoko, Razak Simpson from Nations, and Isaac Afful from Samartex. This move not only showcases local talent but also underscores Addo’s commitment to integrating players from the Ghana Premier League into the national team.

The squad is bolstered by the return of several key players, including Mohammed Kudus, Jordan Ayew, Fatawu Issahaku, and Antoine Semenyo. Joseph Paintsil and Ibrahim Osman are also back after recovering from injuries, bringing additional strength and experience to the Black Stars as they prepare for these crucial matches.

The Road Ahead

Ghana faces a must-win situation in both qualifiers, needing to secure victories against Angola on November 15 in Luanda and Niger on November 18 in Accra.

Additionally, the Black Stars will be hoping for a slip from Sudan to maintain their chances of qualifying for the tournament in Morocco..
