President Mahama Doubles Security Recruitment to 40,000 to Strengthen National Security

President John Dramani Mahama has directed a significant expansion in the recruitment of personnel into the country’s security services, increasing the target from 20,000 to 40,000 over the next four years.

The directive follows a high-level meeting held on Sunday, March 16, 2026, between the President and heads of the nation’s security agencies, alongside the Minister for the Interior and the Acting Minister for Defence.

The engagement focused on progress made in the ongoing recruitment exercise and strategies to strengthen coordination within the security sector.

After receiving briefings from the agency heads, the President announced the upward revision of the recruitment target, describing the move as part of efforts to enhance national security while creating additional employment opportunities for citizens.

The meeting was attended by the Chief of Staff, the Secretary to the President, the Senior Presidential Advisor on Governmental Affairs, the National Security Coordinator, the Inspector General of Police, the Director General of the Ghana Prisons Service, the Director General of the Ghana National Fire Service, the Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service, and the Director General of the Narcotics Control Commission.

Government officials say the expanded recruitment drive is expected to strengthen operational capacity across the security services while promoting transparency and fairness in the enlistment process.
