Gov’t Orders Shutdown of Six Illegal Radio Stations
The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Sam George, has directed the National Communications Authority (NCA) to take immediate enforcement action against six radio stations for operating without valid frequency authorizations.
According to the Minister, the operations of these radio stations violate Section 2(4) of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), which mandates that no entity shall operate a broadcasting service without proper authorization from the NCA.
A statement released by the Ministry named the affected stations as Fire Group of Companies, I-Zar Consult, Abochannel Media Group, Okyeame Radio, Mumen Bono Foundation, and Osikani Community FM.
“These entities have failed to renew their authorizations, fulfill statutory payment obligations, or submit the required documentation within the stipulated timeframe.
“As a result, their authorizations have lapsed by operation of law, rendering their continued operations illegal,” the statement read.
The Ministry reiterated that the enforcement action is necessary to ensure compliance with broadcasting regulations and maintain order within the media landscape. It further urged all broadcasting entities to adhere strictly to licensing requirements to avoid similar sanctions.
The NCA is expected to take swift action to shut down the affected stations and ensure they do not resume operations without proper authorization.
