Aitana Bonmati’s Extra-Time Heroics Send Spain to Euro 2025 Final

Spain’s Aitana Bonmati delivered a stunning extra-time winner to secure a 1-0 victory over Germany, propelling her team into the Women’s European Championship final for the first time. The thrilling match took place on Wednesday, setting the stage for a showdown against reigning champions England on Sunday.

Bonmati broke the deadlock in the 113th minute, expertly maneuvering into the left channel. Spotting a gap left by German goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger, she unleashed a powerful shot from a tight angle, finding the net and sending her teammates into a frenzy.

The match was a tactical battle, with Spain dominating possession but struggling to break through Germany’s well-organized defense. Spain captain Irene Paredes nearly opened the scoring in the first half, hitting the foot of the post with a header. Meanwhile, Germany’s Klara Buehl showcased her pace and skill, threatening the Spanish defense but failing to find the back of the net.

Despite Spain’s relentless attacks, the first 90 minutes concluded without a goal, forcing the match into extra time. As the clock ticked down, it seemed Germany might force a penalty shootout; however, Bonmati’s late strike changed everything.

For Bonmati, the goal was especially poignant. Having faced a meningitis-related health scare prior to the tournament, her performance on such a big stage is a testament to her resilience. “I feel proud. We deserve it. We’ve had a brutal championship. It’s the first time we’ve beaten Germany in a major final,” she reflected after the match.

Germany, who had entered the game with an impressive record of nine wins in ten previous Euro semifinals, were left to rue missed opportunities. Berger, who had been a standout performer in Germany’s quarterfinal victory over France, took responsibility for the decisive goal. “I take the blame for that. The near post had to be covered,” she admitted, expressing disappointment not just for herself but for her teammates who had fought valiantly.
