Nico Williams picks Asamoah Gyan as his favourite Ghanaian player
Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams has revealed that he looked up to Asamoah Gyan growing up and tried learning some of his moves.
Speaking in an interview with TV3 monitored by norvanreports, the Spanish U21 player who is of Ghanaian descent couldn’t hide his love and admiration for the iconic talisman as he tagged him the best striker he has ever seen.
“When I was six years old, I loved Asamoah Gyan. He is the best striker [I have seen]. He scored a lot of goals”.
“I watched a lot of his matches and try to transmit his style to my football. I practiced to be like him and try to score goals like him,” he added.
Gyan had a successful career with the Black Stars, scoring 51 goals and leading Ghana to three World Cups in a row from 2006 to 2014 and also holds the record as Africa’s top scorer in the World Cup.
The mercurial forward has not played for the national team since the 2019 AFCON and last played for Ghanaian club Legon Cities in the 2020/2021 season.
Ghana will hugely be remembered by the ordinary Ghanaian football fan for missing that golden chance against Uruguay in the quaterfinals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa where Ghana eventually lost on penalties to bow out.
Nico Williams’ brother Iñaki Williams recently switched nationality and is now available for the Black Stars but Nico is yet to do so as he is unclear about his future.
