UCL: PSG Edges Liverpool on Penalties; Bayern Outclass Leverkusen
In a thrilling night of UEFA Champions League action, Paris Saint-Germain triumphed over Liverpool in a dramatic penalty shootout, while Bayern Munich continued their impressive form with a commanding victory over Bayer Leverkusen.
At Anfield, PSG secured their spot in the quarterfinals after the tie ended 1-1 on aggregate, leading to penalties where they emerged victorious 4-1. Ousmane Dembélé scored the only goal of the match, leveling the aggregate score after Liverpool’s late winner in the first leg. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who faced criticism for his performance in the first match, redeemed himself by making two vital saves in the shootout, denying Darwin Núñez and Curtis Jones.
“It was a great performance. We really deserved to go through over the two legs, hands down,” said PSG captain Marquinhos. The French side will now face either Aston Villa or Club Brugge in the next round.
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich comfortably advanced with a 5-0 aggregate win against Leverkusen. England captain Harry Kane was instrumental once again, scoring and assisting in a 2-0 victory at the BayArena. Following a 3-0 win in the first leg, Bayern showed no signs of letting up, with Kane tapping in from a Joshua Kimmich cross early in the second half to seal the tie.
Barcelona advanced after a 3-1 victory over Benfica, with Lamine Yamal and Raphinha shining. Barcelona’s win was marred by the recent loss of club doctor Carles Minarro, and the team dedicated their performance to his memory.
In Milan, Inter secured their place in the quarterfinals with a 2-1 win over Feyenoord, resulting in a 4-1 aggregate score. Marcus Thuram and Hakan Calhanoglu were on the scoresheet, ensuring a strong showing from the Italian champions.
