Ghana Secures 8th Spot in Africa for Best Internet Quality
Ghana has been ranked 8th in Africa for internet quality, according to the 2024 Surfshark Digital Quality of Life Index (DQL). The country secured an index score of 0.304, reflecting its performance in internet speed, stability, and overall digital connectivity.
Mauritius topped the African rankings with an internet quality index of 0.361, followed by Ivory Coast (2nd), Egypt (3rd), and Algeria (4th). South Africa, Senegal, and Burkina Faso placed 5th, 6th, and 7th, respectively. Morocco and Nigeria rounded off the top 10, ranking 9th and 10th.
The report highlights that while Africa has seen improvements in digital connectivity, challenges such as slow internet speeds, high data costs, and inconsistent network coverage continue to limit access to essential online services, including e-commerce, telemedicine, and digital banking.
Africa’s Position in the Global Digital Landscape
The 2024 Surfshark DQL Index assessed 121 countries based on five key pillars: internet affordability, internet quality, e-infrastructure, e-security, and e-government. These factors were further analyzed through 14 indicators measuring a country’s overall digital well-being.
Despite advancements, African nations continue to lag in global digital rankings, particularly in internet quality. The highest-ranked African country placed 66th globally, while European nations dominated the top 10. Only 18 countries outside of Europe made it into the top 50.
As digital transformation accelerates worldwide, the report underscores the need for African governments to enhance internet accessibility and affordability to bridge the digital divide.
