Uncertainty Surrounds Otto Addo’s Future as GFA Prioritizes Rebuilding Black Stars After AFCON Failure
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is focusing on rebuilding the Black Stars but has not addressed the future of head coach Otto Addo following a disappointing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.
Despite public pressure for his dismissal, the GFA remained silent on Addo’s position after a high-stakes meeting on Wednesday involving the GFA Executive Council, Regional Football Association Chairmen, and Addo himself.
Ghana’s dismal performance saw the team fail to win any of their six matches, scoring only three goals, leading to their first AFCON absence in twenty years.
During the meeting, Addo presented a comprehensive 56-page technical report outlining the team’s challenges and proposing a vision for rebuilding. He accepted full responsibility for the Black Stars’ poor showing and emphasized plans to enhance discipline, accountability, and team cohesion.
While the GFA’s statement reaffirmed a commitment to rebuilding the team, it did not mention Addo’s job status. The GFA emphasized the importance of fostering collective will to transform the Black Stars into a formidable force.
However, media reports suggest the GFA may retain Addo despite his lackluster record of just two wins in ten matches since his appointment in March 2024. With six consecutive winless games, concerns about his capability to lead the team through the ongoing 2026 World Cup qualifiers remain.
