- GSE Closes Higher as Buying Interest Outweighs Selling Pressure
The Ghana Stock Exchange closed higher on Thursday, July 16, 2026, as selective buying in key equities helped the broader market maintain its upward trajectory despite losses in some banking and consumer counters.
The benchmark GSE Composite Index gained 39.62 points, equivalent to 0.27%, to close at 14,896.64 points, lifting its year-to-date return to 69.85%. The performance reflected sustained investor interest in selected large-cap and growth counters, particularly MTNGH, Ecobank Ghana and some Ghana Alternative Market stocks.
The GSE Financial Stocks Index, however, moved in the opposite direction, declining by 76.89 points, or 0.93%, to settle at 8,181.33 points. Its year-to-date return eased to 76.05%, underlining the mixed tone of the session as gains in some financial counters were offset by selling pressure in others.
Market capitalisation also slipped, falling by 0.39% to GH¢284.74 billion, even as the Composite Index advanced. The decline points to the uneven nature of Thursday’s trading, with positive price movement in some counters failing to fully offset losses in other market heavyweights.
Turnover weakened sharply compared with the previous session. Total volume traded stood at 2,388,013 shares, down 65.70% day-on-day, while total value traded fell by 72.70% to GH¢9.89 million. The contraction in turnover suggests that while sentiment remained broadly positive, trading activity was less aggressive than in the preceding session.
Kasapreko PLC dominated market activity, leading the turnover chart with 1,105,197 shares valued at GH¢2.21 million. The stock, however, closed lower at GH¢2.00, down GH¢0.02 or 0.99%, indicating that the heavy activity was accompanied by selling pressure.
MTNGH followed with 191,493 shares valued at GH¢1.26 million. The telecoms stock closed at GH¢6.59 after gaining GH¢0.12, representing a 1.85% increase. Its performance provided important support to the Composite Index and reinforced its role as one of the most influential counters on the exchange.
Standard Chartered Bank Ghana was also among the most traded stocks by value, recording turnover of GH¢1.25 million from 17,843 shares. The stock, however, declined by GH¢0.80 to close at GH¢70.10, a fall of 1.13%.
Benso Oil Palm Plantation traded 11,884 shares worth GH¢950,705.06 and closed marginally higher at GH¢80.00. SIC Insurance also recorded strong activity, with 149,911 shares valued at GH¢899,466.00, closing unchanged at GH¢6.00.
Intravenous Infusions led the gainers, rising by GH¢0.03 or 8.33% to close at GH¢0.39. Hords followed with a gain of GH¢0.01 or 6.25% to settle at GH¢0.17, while MTNGH’s 1.85% rise placed it among the day’s notable advancers.
Other gainers included Republic Bank Ghana, which rose by GH¢0.05 or 1.25% to close at GH¢4.05, and Ecobank Ghana, which gained GH¢0.21 or 0.57% to close at GH¢37.00. BOPP’s marginal gain also added to the positive side of the market.
On the downside, Ecobank Transnational Incorporated led the decliners, shedding GH¢0.10 or 4.85% to close at GH¢1.96. TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana also fell sharply, losing GH¢2.00 or 4.76% to settle at GH¢40.00. SCB declined by 1.13%, while Kasapreko dropped by 0.99%.
The session showed that buying interest remained present but highly selective. Investors continued to rotate into counters with perceived momentum, liquidity or defensive value, while profit-taking and valuation adjustments weighed on others.
Upcoming dividend payments may also continue to influence investor positioning. Enterprise Group is expected to pay GH¢0.16 per share on August 14, 2026, GOIL is scheduled to pay GH¢0.06 per share on August 10, 2026, Societe Generale Ghana is expected to pay GH¢0.24 per share on September 7, 2026, while TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana is scheduled to pay GH¢2.34 per share on August 24, 2026.
The key signal from Thursday’s trading is that the GSE remains positive on a year-to-date basis, but the market is becoming increasingly selective. The Composite Index continues to advance, yet declining turnover, pressure on financial stocks and mixed price movement show that investors are carefully choosing where to deploy capital.
For now, the market’s upward momentum remains intact, but the breadth of participation will be important in determining whether the rally can be sustained in the sessions ahead.
